The program only covers laptops for four years after they were purchased, so those who bought their Pro when they first launched in Octoberhave a little over a year to make a claim. The issue was first noticed back in January.

One MacBook Pro user started a petition reporting that his display's backlight was acting up.

Apple Finally Addresses Flexgate with New MacBook Pro Repair Program

It turns out the cause of the issue is a cable that connects the display to the base of the laptop. The cable is a bit too short, and over time the stretching caused by opening and closing the MacBook creates a faulty connection.

An iFixit breakdown of a MacBook showed that Apple quietly fixed the problem in newer models by using a longer cable.

Of course, this did nothing to address the issue that users are having, so Apple initiated the repair program. If complaints continue, expect Cupertino to expand the repair program. Affected users can drop off their defective unit at the closest Apple authorized service provider or Apple Store.

Alternatively, they can contact Apple Support to set up a mail-in repair. In brief: When you turn on your MacBook Pro, does it look like your desktop is about to put on a vaudeville show?

Apple Quietly Addresses Flexgate Issue In 2018 MacBook Pros

Problems like the keyboard which has, thankfully, been at least slightly addressed by Applepoor thermal performanceand questionable battery performance and lifespan point to a bigger picture: This MacBook Pro design is a bit too far on the form side of the line between form and function that Apple is known for walking so well.

The issue is fairly simple: the current generation of MacBook Pro laptops —present uses flexible ribbon cables to connect the display to a display controller board beneath the Touch Bar.

Within a seemingly short time, those cables are starting to fatigue and tear. When it first debuted, the design seemed fine.

But as always, the devil is in the details. Apple opted for thin, fragile flex cables as opposed to the beefier wire cables used in previous designs that could be routed through the hinge instead of wrapped around it, helping mitigate the stress of repeated openings and closings.

But the bigger problem is that, in an apparent effort to make the display as thin as possible, Apple designed the cables as part of the display, so they cannot be replaced. Our good friend Louis Rossmann captured the problem on video; can you sense his frustration? This problem is frustrating on multiple levels.

Replace the cable that connects the display portion of the touch bar to the logic board. The screen cable failed after three month on the laptop - there was a delay in fixing it because I was told that replacement screens were not yet in the pipeline to the authorized repair services. It was fixed in February In June the laptop suffered the same display problem. Apple replaced the screen at no cost it is still covered under AppleCare.

A question is whether the replacement screen has the same cable as the original. Thank you apple giving us a headache …i lost confidence to any future apple laptop they will be designing and will just get a heavier but reliable older macbook pro.

Check if the repair program is till up, because one or maybe two month ago I went to an apple store and they repair the problem for free under a repair program they had. Now that mine is fixed the question I have is if they fix it putting the 2mm longer robin cable or they just replace it with the same short one it had at the begging.

Still does not find anywhere that anwser…. My MBP has the flexgate issue and went completely black so I took it an Apple reseller to get it repaired under the program.Apple quietly made changes in its MacBook Pro by using longer ribbon cables. Presumably, these longer cables will also be present in the model introduced this week. The program Apple announced today only covers inch models.

But we know for a fact that the issue also affects the inch variant for This repair program is a long time coming, and a good first step in addressing Flexgate. I have a concern and hope someone here can help me… I was one of the people experiencing this problem in my MacBook Pro with Touchbar and with the program it was replace and now my display is like new. But, I have a question does someone in the ifixit team know if the repair is with the new and longer 2mm cable or they just repair the display changing the ribbon cables with new ones but with the same length?

Thank you apple giving us a headache …i lost confidence to any future apple laptop they will be designing and will just get a heavier but reliable but older macbook pro.

Was silly for them to give up on the glowing Apple Logo as well, and if any of this is for the sake of thinness, Apple needs to fire that guy.

Apple is supposedly into the greening of the world but makes these wasteful and costly design decisions. Obviously the living legend was to busy playing with his cars or shotguns to attend to even verify that flex tests were actually run. Not so sure. I suspect a tag team decision to lower material costs at the expense of performance…. Just the other day I was able to fend off an effort by higher-ups to replace my work MBP with a Windows laptop. If the work MBP goes though, they will almost certainly not authorize a Mac replacement.

The new MBP design since is the reason for the company I work in around people to delay some of the hardware upgrades. It just asks for the overheating and a costly repairs. It makes you pay a few hundreds dollars for a worthless functionality a TouchBar. The battery lasts a few hours less.

Apple launches repair program for MacBook Pro 'flexgate' defect

I would hope if there was a reason to believe so. But because he has so much clout, they say No. Another example of thin problems is the new Mini which could be bigger and have a GPU slot. Also the bigger Mini two generations ago had easy to remove RAM with a simple spring clip takes one minute. Why does a desktop need to be so thin and loose so much functionality?

Steve Jobs was interested in both art and engineering. His leadership is sorely missed. As others pointed out Jobs rejected the first few versions of the iPhone Ive came out with. And thinness in of of itself as a design objective is not necessarily best for the customer, or Apple. Time to stop designing devices for Munchkins Jony at the expense of functionality and upgradability. No one is applauding you.
